As per the statistics presented by the PRS Legislative Research and the Election Commission, it was concluded by ‘India Today Data Intelligence Unit’ that at least; ten actors from Bollywood and the regional movie industry won the 16th Lok Sabha elections in India, 2019. We have always seen that political parties have been effectively harnessing the power of the celebrities just before the elections. More often than not, this ploy works and thanks to the popularity and fanfare, many renowned film stars have helped political parties win elections in the past. Even in 2019, film celebrities have made political parties proud by winning the Lok Sabha elections from their allotted constituencies.
The Actors Who Contested the Lok Sabha Elections in 2019
Bollywood film star Sunny Deol joined the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) and was fielded as the BJP candidate for the Lok Sabha seat for Gurdaspur. He won from his constituency. Sunny Deol became the latest Deol family member to win the Lok Sabha elections and be a member of the parliament on a Bharatiya Janata Party ticket. Sunny’s step-mom Hema Malini and his dad Dharmendra, both high-profile Bollywood celebrities, have already been members of BJP to be elected with stupendous warmth to the Lok Sabha. After he won the election, the budding politician Sunny Deol expressed his gratitude to the people and promised that he would surely work actively for their welfare and asked the public to go on supporting him in future. Sunny Deol’s victory became top Bollywood news this month.
Urmila Matondkar, the Rangeela star joined the Congress Party and was fielded by the Congress for their North Mumbai seat. Even though the choice left many amazed, incredible crowds flocked to her rallies highlighting the deep relationship and the bond Bollywood has with the Indian public and Indian politics. Bollywood stars add the much-desired star power and appeal to any election campaign and they are able to convince the public and convey a party’s ideologies, policies, and vision more clearly than anybody else because of their superlative oratory skills. However, Congress’s decision to field Urmila Matondkar against BJP candidate Gopal Shetty for the North Mumbai Constituency with the aim of winning fans’ votes flopped miserably in the Lok Sabha elections in 2019. She lost by a whopping 4.6 lakh votes and Congress had to witness one of the biggest defeats ever.
Hema Malini is a Bollywood actor-turned-politician and she won for BJP from the Mathura constituency by a huge margin of 2, 93,471 votes. This is her second win for BJP contesting from Mathura for a seat in the Parliament. The lawmaker spoke to the media and expressed her joy and amazement at winning the election with such a huge margin. She expressed her heartfelt gratitude to the people of India and especially, to the Mathura public for making this happen.
