5 Ways To Keep Active During Lockdown

Over the past few months, we’ve all been doing our bit to restrict the spread of Coronavirus by staying inside and keeping ourselves to ourselves. Whilst this is helpful to the general cause, it does create a particular problem – how to stay physically active when outdoor movement is restricted.

Now, the rules may be starting to slacken off, but we’re still no nearer to knowing when life will get back to a place we’d call normal. So, with this in mind, we’re going to look at 5 tips you can use to keep your body active during the pandemic.

So, without wasting any time, let’s begin!

Tip #1 – Try ‘Walking to Work’

If you’re currently furloughed or working from home, it can be difficult to separate your professional life from your home life. What can be really helpful in creating a delineation between work and home is to take a walk around the block in the morning for 20 minutes to mimic having to walk to your place of work. You may end up back at the same place, but this physical will stand you in good stead for the day.

Not only do you get something of a kick-start for your metabolism by taking in some exercise, but you also focus the mind at the same time. Research has proven that exercise helps the brain to function more efficiently, so you’ll get a real boost to your concentration levels.

Tip #2 – Make the Most of Your Freedom

Whilst we have nothing like the social freedom we did before lockdown, we have regained the ability to enjoy as much outdoor exercise as we want. Whether that means a long dog walk to you or a 5 mile run, you really need to make the most of what’s on offer.

Anyone stuck at home can quickly get into the habit of not bothering to exercise when no one and nothing (like the daily commute) is making it necessary to. The more it becomes part of your routine, the stronger and more healthy you’ll stay.

Tip #3 – Enrol in an Online Exercise Class

One of the great things about the digital world we live in is that the internet makes a lot of things possible that weren’t before and this presents certain opportunities. For example, taking an online exercise class can be really helpful in this regard, as it provides a structure around which to base your exercise routine.

The latest remote technology allows people to feel like they’re in the room with their fitness instructor, which means that you get the uplift in motivation to go that bit further. Celebrities like Joe wicks even present free regular classes to get your children active, so why not use them?

Tip #4 – Get the Family Involved

While we’re on the subject of the rest of your family, it really does pay dividends to get the rest of them involved with your exercise experience. Not only is it more fun that way, but you’re keeping your kids occupied at the same time as giving yourself extra motivation.

You could even get your extended family involved over WhatsApp or Zoom if you really want to spread the positive vibes! It also doesn’t have to be a serious workout, as a few outdoor games or even yoga can be your focus. Whatever gets your body active and works for you is suitable.

Tip #5 – Start a Charity Challenge

As we saw with the amazing Captain Tom Moore, great things can happen when you put your mind to it, even when you’re trapped at home. Attempting a charity challenge obviously helps the person or organisation that you’re raising money for and gives you a focus for your exercise routine.

Now, no one is expecting you to raise £29m for the NHS, but the act of focusing on something like a challenge can be great for your motivation and with social media, you have the perfect platform on which to publicise it. Whatever good comes out of it is a bonus, as you’re keeping yourself active, regardless of how much you raise.
